VFW encourages all posts to participate in the Adopt-A-Unit program that promotes bringing the military into VFW’s family. It’s one that demonstrates VFW’s care and concern for the well being of America’s uniformed men and women. By adopting a unit, Posts establish and sustain a long-term friendship with those serving stateside and abroad.

VFW Department of Nevada also encourages Nevada military units and supporting Family Support Center personnel to contact the VFW Department of Nevada MAP Chairman if the units want to be adopted by a VFW post. The MAP Chairman in the Department of Nevada is Bruce Hollinger, phone 1-702-398-3901, email bruce.hollinger@comnett.net. He will find a post to complete the adoption.

Here’s how the Post implements this program:

• Fill out the official Adopt-A-Unit application from the VFW MAP booklet or the application and forward it to “MAP Adopt-A-Unit” at VFW National Headquarters.

• Get on the phone, write a letter or send e-mail to the unit, introducing your Post.

• Find out what your Post can do to support the unit and its needs, then take appropriate action to provide support

• When you have completed a support project, fill out an “Adopt-A-Unit Project Report” and mail or send via facsimile to VFW National Headquarters at the address listed on the form.

• Fill out the annual Adopt-A-Unit Report, due between April 1 and May 30 each year, to document your annual support to the adopted unit.

• To recognize troops from your adopted unit coming home from overseas deployment, you can request troop event funds grants for up to $1500. 

• Use the citation from the VFW Military Assistance Program booklet to recognize the military in your community. Make as many copies as you need.

No matter what endeavors your Post chooses, remember this: The relationship you build with these men and women will impact both the military and the VFW. Make sure the experience is positive for both of these special families.
